In a significant development, the current Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, is poised to assume the role of NATO Secretary-General following the withdrawal of Klaus Iohannis, the Romanian President, from the race. Rutte, who has long been considered the frontrunner for the position, received support from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose initial objections were subsequently dropped.

Rutte's selection as the compromise candidate for the top NATO post required the unanimous agreement of the alliance's 32 members. His widespread support can be attributed to his extensive experience on the international stage and his strong pro-Ukraine stance, while maintaining a more moderate approach compared to potential candidates from NATO's eastern flank.

The breakthrough in Rutte's candidacy came after a meeting between the Dutch Prime Minister and Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán during an EU leaders' dinner. Orbán, who had initially opposed Rutte's bid, reached a written agreement that no Hungarian personnel would be involved in NATO activities in Ukraine, and no Hungarian funds would be allocated to support them.

Orbán expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stating, "This is an important step towards integrating Ukraine into the EU area, increasing Ukrainian exports, and European imports, strengthening the economy and stability."

In addition to Rutte's forthcoming position as NATO Secretary-General, there have been other positive developments for Ukraine. Denys Shmyhal, the Ukrainian Prime Minister, announced that Ukraine and the European Union have extended their agreement on the liberalization of freight transport for one year, with the potential for an automatic extension until the end of 2025. This extension represents a significant milestone towards integrating Ukraine into the EU area and fostering economic growth and stability.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed his appreciation to Zambia for their support in achieving a sustainable, comprehensive, and just peace as part of the Peace Summit Communiqué.

These recent developments not only cement Rutte's position as the next NATO Secretary-General but also underline the growing cooperation between Ukraine, the EU, and NATO in pursuit of shared goals. Rutte's experience and diplomatic skills position him well to navigate the complex challenges faced by NATO and its member nations in the evolving geopolitical landscape.

As Rutte prepares to assume this pivotal role, it is expected that his leadership will focus on strengthening the NATO alliance, further supporting Ukraine, and promoting peace and stability in the region.
