Drunken Driver Crashes into Deer Park Nail Salon, Killing Four and Injuring Nine

In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon, a drunken driver crashed his SUV into a nail salon in Deer Park, Suffolk, resulting in the death of four people and leaving nine others injured, according to Suffolk police. The incident occurred at Hawaii Nail & Spa on Grand Boulevard at approximately 4:32 p.m.
The driver, identified as 64-year-old Steven Schwally of Dix Hills, crashed his 2020 Chevy Traverse into the front of the salon while it was open and conducting business. The SUV plowed through the store, reaching all the way to the back, trapping employees and customers inside.
Deer Park Third Assistant Chief Dominic Albanese stated that firefighters discovered four people dead upon their arrival. A physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner pronounced three women and one man dead at the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been released by police.
Nine other individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Five were taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, three were transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore via ambulance, and one was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk police helicopter.
Schwally, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was charged with driving while intoxicated and was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital for treatment. Records show that he had previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in 2014, resulting in probation, a suspension of his license, and a fine of $500.
The accident left the nail salon extensively damaged, with shattered storefront windows and the SUV lodged near the back wall. Surrounding the scene, police and firefighters maintained a perimeter while onlookers wiped tears from their eyes.
A total of nine fire departments, along with approximately 150 firefighters and paramedics, responded to the mass-casualty event. Fire officials activated their crisis team to manage the situation.
The nail salon is situated in a strip mall, adjacent to a traffic light and opposite a Kohl's shopping center. The Tanger Outlets are also in close proximity to the accident site.
As authorities continue to investigate the crash, the community of Deer Park is left in shock and mourning. Local residents, who frequented the salon, expressed their grief and disbelief at the horrifying incident. Regular customers shared personal anecdotes and expressed their concern for the fate of familiar faces they encountered during their visits.
