In a tragic case that captured national attention, the driver involved in the shooting death of 6-year-old Aiden Leos on the 55 Freeway in Orange County has pleaded guilty to related charges. Wynne Lee, 26, of Costa Mesa, admitted her role in the murder of Aiden Leos and entered a guilty plea in court on Friday.
Lee pleaded guilty to one felony count of accessory after the fact and one misdemeanor count of having a concealed firearm in a vehicle. It was revealed that Lee was behind the wheel of her car with her boyfriend, Marcus Eriz, in the passenger seat when he fired a single shot at Aiden's mother's car, tragically hitting the young boy.
During the court proceedings, Lee confessed to assisting Eriz in hiding after the shooting with the intention of helping him evade arrest, trial, conviction, and punishment. As a result, she received the maximum sentence of four years, or 1,460 days, in prison for both charges.
However, due to a current state law allowing defendants to accrue credit for court-ordered home confinement, Lee has already served out her sentence. Since June 2021, she has been under home confinement and GPS monitoring, earning a total of 2,106 days in credit time served.
Judge King acknowledged that Lee had exceeded the maximum period of time imposed by the court under the present law. While Lee will have to pay $670 in fines by next month, the judge also ordered her to pay restitution, with the amount to be determined at a later time.
The incident occurred on May 21, 2021, when Aiden Leos, seated in a booster seat, was tragically shot and killed while his mother, Joanna Cloonan, was driving him to kindergarten. The altercation began after Lee's car cut off Cloonan's vehicle, leading to a gesture that was interpreted as sarcastic. Moments later, a shot was fired from a 9mm Glock, striking Aiden in the passenger compartment.
Both Eriz and Lee were subsequently arrested by CHP officers on June 6, 2021. Eriz, Lee's boyfriend, had previously been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the murder of Aiden Leos.
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of road rage incidents and the need for increased awareness and measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
