In a shocking turn of events, a 41-year-old man stands accused of brutally decapitating his parents and killing their dog in their San Juan Capistrano home. Joseph Brandon Gerdvil was apprehended by Orange County Sheriff's deputies on July 9, following a series of disturbing incidents that culminated in him singing Tina Turner's hit song, "What's Love Got to Do With It," after being shot by a deputy.
According to authorities, the horrific events began when Gerdvil sent photos of his bloodied mother to a cousin via text message. Concerned, the relative immediately dialed 911 at around 7:30 a.m., reporting a possible domestic assault on the elderly couple who resided in a mobile home community on Alipaz Street. The cousin also mentioned that Gerdvil had a history of mental health issues and previous acts of violence.
Simultaneously, another 911 call was made by a maintenance worker from the same community who claimed to be chased by a bloodied man wielding a fork. Shockingly, the bloodied man turned out to be Gerdvil, who then took off in the maintenance worker's golf cart.
Arriving at the scene, sheriff's deputies found a person on the ground, bleeding, and discovered a horrifying scene inside Gerdvil's parents' home. "There's a head on the counter," one of the deputies reported to dispatchers.
Shortly after, Gerdvil reappeared on a nearby bike path and confronted a Sheriff's Department community service officer sitting in her vehicle. He hurled a shovel at her car and made his escape in the stolen golf cart. Body camera footage shows the blood-soaked Gerdvil later parking the cart on the sidewalk, approaching a deputy while brandishing a metal object, and ignoring orders.
In response to the imminent threat, the deputy discharged his firearm five times, causing Gerdvil to fall to the ground. Despite being wounded, Gerdvil continued to display disturbing behavior, using profanity and making unintelligible statements. As law enforcement and medical personnel attended to his injuries, Gerdvil unexpectedly began singing snippets of popular songs, including Stevie Wonder's "I just called to say I love you" and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It."
The extent of Gerdvil's wounds has not been disclosed, but authorities have confirmed that he remains in the hospital under custody. He now faces two counts of homicide, with the Orange County district attorney's office investigating the shooting while the Orange County Sheriff's Department homicide detail looks into the killings.
This horrific incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues in our society, and raises questions about the potential warning signs that may have been missed in Gerdvil's case. As the investigation unfolds, authorities will undoubtedly strive to provide justice for the victims and shed light on the circumstances surrounding this chilling crime.
