Publicist Juda Engelmayer confirmed that the 72-year-old, who is serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault, has been battling diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid on his heart and lungs.
Weinstein's conviction for the rape and sexual assault of a former assistant and an actress was initially thrown out by the city's appeals court in April 2020, citing an unfair trial. However, he remains in prison while awaiting a retrial later this year. Weinstein is also appealing a separate 16-year sentence in a rape trial in California.
The latest records from the New York City Correction Department reveal that Weinstein is currently at the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward, a facility he has been admitted to multiple times since his conviction. Following his conviction, Weinstein underwent a heart procedure at Bellevue to address a blocked artery, and he was previously hospitalized in April.
Weinstein's lawyer, Arthur Aidala, expressed the stark change in lifestyle for his client, stating that Weinstein was once accustomed to indulging in champagne and caviar but now finds himself purchasing potato chips and M&Ms from the prison commissary.
Adding to the legal challenges faced by Weinstein, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office recently announced its intention to charge him for "additional violent sexual assaults" based on new testimony from more women. It was in 2006 that former production assistant Miriam Haley was sexually assaulted by Weinstein, while aspiring actress Jessica Mann was raped by him in 2013, as determined by a jury.
With Weinstein's health concerns and the pending legal battles, his fate remains uncertain. The ongoing saga of his trial and potential retrial continues to captivate public attention, highlighting the importance of holding powerful figures accountable for their actions.
