The suspect involved in the shooting, identified as Timothy Wayne Goodman, a 65-year-old resident of North Carolina, now faces multiple charges in connection with the incident. The charges against him include aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Goodman himself sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire and is receiving medical treatment.
The tragic chain of events began when a Marion police officer attempted a routine traffic stop on Goodman for a moving violation. However, instead of immediately stopping, Goodman continued to drive, prompting sheriff's deputies to join in the pursuit. Eventually, the suspect pulled over near the intersection of Route 16 and Hatchery Drive.
As officers approached the suspect's vehicle, Goodman became agitated and opened fire, striking Deputy Reedy and initiating an exchange of gunfire. The responding officers displayed immense bravery and swiftly neutralized the threat, injuring the suspect in the process.
Commonwealth's Attorney Phillip Blevins expressed his determination to hold the murderer accountable for his actions, stating that charges have been filed against Goodman. Blevins visited Deputy Fedorchuk in the hospital, providing support during this difficult time.
The loss of Deputy Reedy has left a profound impact on the community. Sheriff Chip Shuler described him as an "absolute hero." Reedy had served in law enforcement for seven years and leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and three children.
Expressing their condolences and support, State Sen. Travis Hackworth, Del. Jed Arnold, State Sen. Todd Pillion, and Del. Terry Kilgore all spoke at a press conference. They emphasized the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the need to keep communities safe.
Virginia State Police are leading the investigation into the incident, at the request of the Marion Police Department and the Smyth County Sheriff's Office. This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers as they work to protect and serve their communities.
