TAMPA, Fla. - A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) deputy was injured in a deadly shooting on Saturday night while responding to a 911 call in Tampa. According to officials, the incident unfolded when 48-year-old Rebecca Ann Themelis contacted the HCSO dispatch center to report that her husband, 51-year-old Christos Byron Themelis, had been shot.
As deputies arrived at the scene in the 14000 block of Cactus Wren Place shortly after 11 p.m., they encountered Christos Alexander Themelis, Jr., aged 19, and Rebecca Themelis outside the residence. Bodycam footage captured Deputy Shane McGough urgently pleading for Rebecca Themelis to move away from her son for her own safety.
However, Christos Themelis Jr. proceeded to shoot his mother and then turned his weapon towards the deputies. The HCSO reported that five deputies engaged in an exchange of gunfire with Christos Themelis Jr., during which Deputy McGough was shot in the leg. The suspect then retreated into the home, barricading himself inside.
Responding to the tense situation, the HCSO's SWAT Team, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, and Crisis Negotiation Team were called for assistance. After gaining entry into the residence, law enforcement personnel discovered that Christos Themelis Jr. had succumbed to his injuries.
Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his condolences, stating, "The monster we encountered this evening is responsible for not only injuring our deputy but also killing his own mother and father. Our deputies responded to a chaotic scene and immediately put themselves in harm's way to protect our community. Without our deputy's quick and skillful response, an entire neighborhood would have been in danger."
The five deputies involved in the incident were identified as Deputy Shane McGough (26 years old, two years of service), Deputy Brandon Schade (26 years old, one year of service), Deputy Richard Ziegler (33 years old, nine years of service), Deputy Bjar Atkins (38 years old, 13 years of service), and Deputy Ciara Moncada (34 years old, two years of service). Authorities confirmed that none of the deputies had previously used deadly force.
On Sunday morning, surgeons successfully removed the bullet from Deputy McGough's leg, and Sheriff Chronister stated that he is expected to make a full recovery within three months. Deputy McGough is currently surrounded by his family and is said to be in good spirits.
Sheriff Chronister urged the community to keep Deputy McGough and his family in their thoughts and prayers during his recovery. Meanwhile, in adherence to HCSO policy, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the shooting incident.
The harrowing events that unfolded in Tampa serve as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. The swift response of the HCSO deputies helped to mitigate the threat to the community, ensuring the safety of local residents amidst this tragic incident.
