In a move to push for a shift in crypto policy, Democratic members of Congress have written a letter to the Democratic National Committee, calling for a pro-crypto stance. According to Representative Wiley Nickel (D-NC), Vice President Kamala Harris has a strong understanding of cryptocurrency and may embrace it as a key issue in her upcoming campaign for the White House.
Speaking at the Bitcoin Nashville conference on Saturday, Rep. Nickel emphasized the need for a "reset" from Vice President Harris regarding her stance on crypto. He revealed that twenty-eight Democratic officials, including several House members, are pressing party leaders for a change in crypto policy.
The growing pressure on the Harris campaign comes as various factions within the Democratic party urge her to publicly support cryptocurrency. With the 2024 election underway and industry leaders flooding the campaign with significant fundraising efforts, crypto has emerged as a prominent campaign issue.
However, Democrats find themselves lagging behind former President Donald Trump's promise to be crypto-friendly, which attracted the support of Bitcoin and crypto enthusiasts who were critical of President Joe Biden's administration and its regulatory approach.
Ironically, even though Trump had previously called Bitcoin a "scam" during his term in the White House from 2017 to 2020, Representative Nickel took the opportunity to highlight this policy flip-flop during his speech, eliciting boos from the audience, which was filled with red MAGA hats. Trump is scheduled to speak at the conference later in the day.
As the 2024 election approaches, Democrats are eager for a reset on their crypto stances, hoping to rally behind Vice President Harris as a pro-crypto candidate. It remains to be seen how the Democratic National Committee will respond to the growing demands for a change in crypto policy and whether Harris will embrace cryptocurrency as a key issue in her campaign for the presidency.
