In a response to a measure introduced by a group of House Republicans to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Donald Trump, three Democratic congressmen have put forth their own proposal. The bill, introduced by Reps. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, Jared Moskowitz of Florida, and John Garamendi of California, aims to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida as the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution."

Rep. Connolly stated, "When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison. I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves."

The decision to rename the federal prison comes as former President Trump faces several federal and state criminal charges. In Florida, he is charged with alleged mishandling of sensitive government information, false statements and representations, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, and corruptly concealing a document. In New York, he is accused of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Additionally, Trump faces charges for allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia state court and federal court in Washington, D.C. Trial dates for these cases have yet to be determined.

The Democratic congressmen behind the bill emphasized their intentions to help the former president, with Rep. Moskowitz noting, "Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings. But he's never had his name on a federal building before, and as a public servant, I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality."

The Republican bill to rename Washington Dulles International Airport has been sponsored by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania and co-sponsored by six other Republicans. The airport, opened in 1962, is currently named after John Foster Dulles, who served as secretary of state under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

As both proposals gain attention, the debate over renaming significant structures and institutions after former President Donald Trump continues. The Democrats' bill is expected to face scrutiny and possible opposition from Republicans. The final decision will be subject to discussions and voting processes to determine if the Miami Federal Correctional Institution will indeed bear the name "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution."
