**Defense Raises Doubts on Investigation into O'Keefe's Death**
The defense team for Karen Read has brought new accusations to the forefront, suggesting that another individual may be responsible for the death of O'Keefe. They have specifically directed attention towards ATF agent Brian Higgins. During a detailed cross-examination, Massachusetts State Police Lt. Yuri Bukhenik was pressed about Higgins' involvement and conduct.
Among the revelations were flirtatious text messages exchanged between Read and Higgins, including a potential romantic kiss. Higgins was alleged to be present at 34 Fairview the night prior to O'Keefe being found unresponsive in the snow. The defense presented video evidence showing Higgins at the Canton Police Department around 1:30 a.m. that morning. Although Higgins claimed he was moving cars, the defense has questioned the veracity of his statement.
Lt. Bukhenik also faced questions regarding Michael Proctor, an investigator he supervised who has since been dismissed from his post. Proctor's professionalism was brought into question after inflammatory text messages surfaced in which he insulted Read and commented on her phone contents inappropriately. Bukhenik admitted Proctor's behavior was unprofessional.
In a separate development, the prosecution has requested permission to discuss a trip that Read and O'Keefe took to Aruba, believing it would shed light on the nature of their relationship. Lt. Bukhenik was excused from the proceedings just after 4 p.m. on Monday.
