**Controversy Surrounding Biden's Authorization for Ukraine to Use Long-Range Missiles**
President Joe Biden's recent decision to permit Ukraine's use of long-range missiles in its conflict with Russia has sparked significant debates. Critics argue this move represents an unnecessary escalation, potentially worsening the situation. Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) expressed his concerns in a letter to President Biden, cautioning against the potentially disastrous impacts of the decision.
In his letter, Rep. Self challenged the authorization of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) strikes inside Russia, highlighting a shift in Moscow's nuclear doctrine under Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Self, Putin's revised policy allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to substantial aerospace attacks, including those involving strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and hypersonic delivery systems.
The Texas congressman stressed that when the U.S. first supplied such weapons to Kyiv, the administration managed to limit their use. However, Self criticized the timing of the current decision, suggesting it undermines President-elect Donald J. Trump's intentions for a negotiated peace. He questioned whether deeper motives were at play, hinting at potential attempts to complicate the incoming Trump administration's stance on Eastern European conflicts.
The decision's timing is particularly notable, given that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been advocating for weeks to use these missiles, capable of traveling up to 190 miles, to combat Russian targets. Initially resistant, Biden reportedly reversed his stance due to the involvement of North Korean troops supporting Russian forces, as reported by the New York Times.
Self pointed out that both Zelensky and Putin showed a willingness to seek resolution once Trump assumed office in January. He emphasized the misgivings of the American public regarding the potential for a larger conflict, advocating for peace born out of strength. He urged Biden to brief Congress on the rationale behind permitting ATACMS by November 25, warning of further oversight actions should the briefing not occur.
As discussions continue, the debate over Biden's decision underscores the delicate balance and high stakes involved in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
