At least 10 people, including children, have been reported dead and 29 injured in a rocket attack on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, according to Israeli authorities. The attack took place in the Majdal Shams area, with Israeli authorities blaming the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for the assault.
Israel stated that it had identified approximately 30 projectiles crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory. Among the locations targeted was a soccer field where children were playing at the time of the attack, resulting in multiple casualties.
However, Hezbollah quickly denied any involvement in the rocket attack, stating that it "firmly denies" firing the rockets.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the attack, describing it as a "terrible and shocking disaster." He accused Hezbollah of targeting innocent children, emphasizing the need for the international community to address such acts of terrorism.
Israel's Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service reported that 29 people were injured, with varying degrees of severity. A large team from MDA was dispatched to the scene, providing immediate medical assistance to the victims, who ranged in age between 10 and 20 years old.
Israeli police confirmed that the incident occurred in multiple sites in the northern Golan, and they are currently securing the area and searching for any additional remnants to mitigate further risks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been briefed on the situation and is engaging in a security consultation with his military secretary.
The Golan Heights, viewed as occupied territory under international law and UN Security Council resolutions, were seized by Israel from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and annexed in 1981. The region is home to approximately 53,000 people, consisting of Israeli settlers, Syrian Druze, and a small population of Alawites.
As the situation continues to develop, more updates are expected to follow.
