In a tragic incident outside a Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee, D'Vontaye Mitchell, a loving husband and father, lost his life on June 30 after being restrained by hotel security guards. Mitchell's widow, DeAsia Harmon, spoke about her devastation in an interview with CNN's Victor Blackwell, describing her husband as a "beautiful person" and a "wonderful father."

Milwaukee Police have now referred four charges of felony murder in Mitchell's death to the district attorney's office, and a homicide investigation is currently underway. The exact cause of Mitchell's death is still pending the full results of his autopsy.

Attorney William F. Sulton, representing the Mitchell family, expressed confidence that the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office will hold the hotel employees accountable. Sulton believes that criminal charges will be issued against not only the four individuals directly involved but also others who could have intervened to prevent Mitchell's tragic fate.

According to Sulton, video evidence captured a front desk manager assaulting Mitchell with a broom, while another security official stood by without intervening. The attorney stressed that Mitchell posed no threat and was retreating from the security officer who had initially attacked him. Despite attempting to leave the hotel to find safety, Mitchell was repeatedly beaten and ultimately killed.

Aimbridge Hospitality, the hotel operator, took swift action by suspending and subsequently firing the "hotel associates" involved in the incident. However, it is currently unclear if the dismissed employees include the security guards seen restraining Mitchell.

Criticism and accusations of racism have also emerged due to the parallels between Mitchell's death and other cases involving the deaths of Black men at the hands of police and authority figures. Demonstrations across the country marked four years since the murder of George Floyd, further highlighting the importance of addressing systemic issues concerning law enforcement and accountability.

Many aspects surrounding Mitchell's death remain unclear, including the events leading up to his encounter with the security guards, the response time of law enforcement officers, and his purpose for being at the hotel. Police allege that Mitchell caused a disturbance, prompting the security guards to remove him from the premises.

In a distressing video shared on social media, Mitchell can be heard pleading for mercy, apologizing, and repeatedly saying "please." As the guards hold him down, an individual that appears to be of Caucasian descent is heard instructing Mitchell to stay down and stop fighting, while another guard indicates to witnesses that Mitchell's fate resulted from an incident in the ladies' room.

The district attorney's office is eagerly awaiting the complete findings of Mitchell's autopsy, which will provide crucial information for the ongoing police investigation. District Attorney John Chisholm emphasized the need to evaluate the events leading to Mitchell's death from the perspective of potential criminal liability.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is also representing the Mitchell family, expressed deep concern over the recurring pattern of encounters between Black individuals and security personnel, underlining issues of excessive force, lack of accountability, and inadequate consideration of mental health.

As the investigation continues, the community and Mitchell's loved ones demand justice for his untimely death, echoing the urgent need for reform in security practices and the protection of individuals' lives, regardless of their race or background.
