A tragic incident unfolded in the parking lot of an east Birmingham apartment complex, where a violent altercation escalated into a deadly shooting that was horrifyingly captured on live Facebook videos. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Asia Alyce Poole, a young mother with a promising future ahead.
According to Mayor Randall Woodfin's Facebook post, the confrontation took place at Valley Brook, now known as Monarch Ridge apartments on Gallant Drive. The situation quickly spiraled out of control as Poole found herself embroiled in a physical fight involving multiple individuals. Initially starting near a vehicle in the parking lot, the altercation then spilled over into a breezeway within one of the apartment buildings.
As tensions reached their peak, a barrage of gunfire erupted, leading to the tragic demise of Poole. Sgt. LaQuitta Wade from the Birmingham Police Department stated that officers from the East Precinct were dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports of shots being fired. Tragically, they arrived to find Poole unresponsive in or near the parking lot. Despite the best efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Heart-wrenching videos captured the anguished cries of Poole's brother and sister in the aftermath of the shooting. Another victim, a male, was also injured but is expected to survive. Investigations have revealed that the initial fight was temporarily broken up in the breezeway before the shots rang out, throwing the scene into chaos.
The scale of the violence was staggering, as authorities initially recovered 36 shell casings from two clustered areas in the parking lot. However, as the investigation progressed, that number tripled, with witness accounts suggesting that the sound of gunfire was even more extensive, akin to hundreds of shots being fired.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the suspect or suspects fled the scene in Poole's Ford sedan, which was subsequently abandoned and discovered in the parking lot of J Wings on Center Point Parkway. As of now, no arrests have been made, but law enforcement agencies are urging anyone with information or additional videos to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade expressed her frustration that more people present did not intercede to defuse the situation before it turned deadly. She emphasized the significance of video surveillance in aiding their investigation but called for greater collective responsibility to prevent such incidents.
Sadly, Poole's death marks the 102nd homicide in Birmingham this year and the second fatal incident that occurred on Tuesday alone. It is important to note that of the 102 homicides in the city, eight have been deemed justifiable and not classified as criminal acts. These alarming statistics highlight the urgency and necessity for community-wide efforts to curb violence and safeguard lives.
The Birmingham Police Department has urged anyone with information about the incident or additional video footage to contact detectives at 205-254-1764 or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. As the investigation continues, the thoughts and condolences of the community go out to the grieving family and loved ones of Asia Alyce Poole, whose life was tragically cut short in this senseless act of violence.
