### David DePape Sentenced to Life in Prison for Brutal Attack on Paul Pelosi
David DePape received a life sentence without the possibility of parole on Tuesday for his violent assault on Paul Pelosi. The state trial included charges such as aggravated kidnapping, false imprisonment of an elder by violence, residential burglary, threatening a family member of a public official, and dissuading a witness by force. Despite a bid from his lawyers for a new trial, the motion was denied.
A federal case in May had already sentenced DePape to 30 years in prison for attempting to hold former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage and attacking her husband with a hammer. The assault occurred when DePape broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco on October 28, 2022, searching for Nancy Pelosi who was not present at the time.
After the conviction in the state case, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins noted that the verdict ensures DePape faces consequences for his egregious actions against the Pelosi family and the democratic system. DePape's attorney, Adam Lipson, expressed discontent with the verdict, arguing that the charges of kidnapping for ransom were unjustifiable given DePape's isolated lifestyle and involvement in various conspiracy theories.
Paul Pelosi himself testified about the harrowing night when DePape confronted him with a hammer and zip ties, asking, "Are you Paul Pelosi?" According to testimony and sources from KGO, Paul Pelosi noted that DePape appeared resolute in his intentions.
Although DePape apologized during the federal case's sentencing hearing, acknowledging his regret for harming Paul Pelosi, he admitted that his actions were driven by a failed plan to confront Nancy Pelosi about Russian influence on the 2016 election. Despite his claims that Paul Pelosi was never meant to be his target, the injuries sustained were severe, including a skull fracture that required hospitalization and surgery.
Following a reopening of the federal sentencing to allow DePape to address the court formally, he was once again sentenced to 30 years in prison. The brutal attack on Paul Pelosi left the 82-year-old with significant trauma, ensuring DePape's lengthy imprisonment.
David DePape remains incarcerated, facing a combined sentence that unequivocally addresses the gravity of his crimes and their impact on the Pelosi family.
