**David DePape Sentenced to Life for Attack on Paul Pelosi**
In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, David DePape was sentenced to life in prison for the violent 2022 attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. DePape had a chance to address the court, during which he made contentious claims about various conspiracies, including the allegation that September 11 was an inside job and that his ex-wife had been replaced by a body double. He also suggested that his court-appointed attorneys were conspiring against him and claimed to have psychic abilities enhanced through meditation.
The incident occurred when DePape broke into the Pelosi residence, demanding to see Nancy Pelosi, who was not home at the time. In the confrontation with Paul Pelosi, which was partially captured on a police officer's body camera, DePape assaulted him with a hammer. As a result, Paul Pelosi was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hands, necessitating surgery.
In June, DePape was found guilty by a California jury on several charges, such as aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and false imprisonment of an elder. Additionally, in November 2023, he was found guilty of federal charges including the attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official, leading to a 30-year prison sentence. Both sentences will be served concurrently.
Paul Pelosi's daughter, Christine Pelosi, read a poignant letter from her father in court, calling for the maximum sentence for DePape. Paul Pelosi recounted the trauma of the night, describing the violent intrusion and how DePape stood over his bed, demanding to know the whereabouts of Nancy Pelosi. He highlighted the lasting impact of the attack, including chronic pain and permanent injuries.
Nancy Pelosi, in her book "The Art of Power" and a recent appearance on "The View," reflected on the harrowing experience, emphasizing that the attack had a profound effect not just physically but emotionally on the entire Pelosi family. She condemned political leaders who trivialized the violence and called for an end to such attacks, urging that violence has no place in resolving political or personal disputes.
Judge Harry Dorfman, who dismissed a request from DePape's legal team for a new trial, made it clear that DePape would never be eligible for parole. “It’s my intention that Mr. DePape will never get out of prison, he can never be paroled,” the judge stated, underscoring the severity of the crime and the court's commitment to ensuring justice.
