In a shocking incident on Friday evening, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked on a square in the center of Copenhagen, leaving her office and the nation in shock. The assailant, a man who approached her and struck her, has been subsequently arrested.
The news of the attack quickly spread, with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen condemning the incident as a "despicable act" that goes against the values cherished in Europe.
The Prime Minister's office released a statement confirming the assault and expressing Frederiksen's shock without providing further details. Meanwhile, the police have arrested the attacker and are currently investigating the incident.
Eyewitnesses recount the Prime Minister being escorted away from the scene, with one witness, Soren Kjergaard, a barista working on the square, mentioning that Frederiksen seemed a little stressed.
The timing of the attack is particularly significant as Denmark is set to vote in the upcoming European Union election in a couple of days. Prior to the incident, Mette Frederiksen had attended an event for the election alongside Social Democrat lead candidate Christel Schaldemose.
Reacting to the attack, Danish Minister of Environment Magnus Heunicke expressed his shock and solidarity with the Prime Minister. He stated, "Mette is naturally shocked by the attack. I must say that it shakes all of us who are close to her."
EU Chief Charles Michel also expressed his outrage, strongly condemning the "cowardly act of aggression."
This incident comes less than a month after Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico survived a shooting incident where he was targeted by attackers. Fico underwent surgery following the attack.
As the news of the assault spread throughout the country, Danes were left horrified once again, witnessing the historic Borsen, a 17th Century building in Copenhagen, being engulfed in flames on Tuesday.
The Danish authorities, in the wake of these events, have intensified security measures and investigations to ensure the safety of their political leaders and the public. The attack on the Prime Minister highlights the need for vigilance and efforts to safeguard democracy and the values that Europe stands for.
