A crossing guard in Taunton, Massachusetts, was terminated from his job on Monday following accusations of physically assaulting a woman and her child with a stop sign stick during an altercation outside a local high school. Louis Chaves, a 68-year-old resident of Taunton, has been charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, specifically the stop sign stick, and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, utilizing a shod foot.

According to prosecutors, the incident took place on Williams Street outside Taunton High School and involved a parent who had stopped her vehicle at an intersection while trying to find a tissue after sneezing. Chaves, identified as the crossing guard in question, began yelling at the woman, demanding that she continue driving. His actions escalated when he inserted the stop sign stick through the passenger window, swinging it recklessly around the car while hurling insults and instructing her to leave the area.

Unfortunately, during the course of this altercation, the stop sign stick struck the woman's daughter in the arm. Police reports state that when the mother exited her vehicle to confront Chaves, he threw her to the ground. The situation grew even more violent as Chaves allegedly attacked her with the stop sign stick, ultimately flinging her onto the pavement. With the woman on the ground, she recounted being repeatedly dragged and kicked by the defendant, resulting in multiple abrasions and lacerations on her arm.

Following his arraignment, Chaves was released and is scheduled to return to court on August 8th. However, his departure from the court was marked by further aggression as he lunged at cameras, prompting a woman to plead with him and attempt to restrain him. Camera footage captures Chaves kicking at photographers, striking one of them and throwing a stick.

In response to the incident, Taunton Public Schools issued a statement acknowledging the physical altercation involving the crossing guard and promptly terminated his employment, effective immediately. Taunton Public Schools expressed their awareness of the incident and made it clear that Chaves is no longer associated with their institution. Meanwhile, the woman involved in the altercation was promptly taken to Morton Hospital to receive treatment for her cuts and abrasions.

The consequences of Chaves' alleged actions are yet to be determined as the legal process moves forward. The incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for students and parents within school premises.
