In a historic move, the crime-riddled city of Oakland, California, is one step closer to reversing its fortunes as it gears up for a recall election in November, targeting its progressive mayor, Sheng Thao. The recall campaign gained significant momentum, with over 40,000 signatures demanding her removal from office.

Critics of Thao, a progressive Democrat lawmaker, are furious over her failure to effectively address the escalating crime wave gripping the city. The Oakland United to Recall Sheng Thao (OUST) campaign highlights her alleged incompetence, dishonesty, and missed opportunities that have exacerbated Oakland's decline.

One glaring accusation against Thao is her mishandling of a $15 million retail theft grant opportunity, which she failed to apply for. Additionally, she controversially fired the Oakland Police chief LaRonne Armstrong without appointing a successor, and her administration's shortcomings allegedly led to the loss of the Oakland A's baseball team.

The crime statistics in Oakland speak for themselves. The number of murders in the city skyrocketed from 78 in 2019 to 126 in the previous year, and overall crime rose by 18% in 2023, with property crime surging by 17% and violent crime by 21%. Residential robberies saw a staggering increase of 118% in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year. Car thefts reached alarming levels too, with one vehicle stolen for every 30 residents in 2023.

The impact of the crime wave extends beyond the rising statistics. Large corporations have pulled out of the city, citing concerns for the safety of their employees and the debilitating effects of rampant retail theft. Even beloved establishments like In-N-Out Burger and Denny's have been forced to close their doors due to the unsafe environment, while Taco Bell has discontinued indoor dining due to spates of incidents.

The recall campaign attributes the worsening situation to Thao's progressive policies, claiming they have dismantled the Oakland Police Department and prioritized the needs of criminals over those of crime victims. The campaign further insists that Thao lacks the necessary competency, credibility, and judgment to lead Oakland out of its current crisis.

Thao, on her part, has disputed the blame-game, asserting that the surge in crime began before she assumed office in 2019. However, this defense has done little to appease the growing anger among residents and businesses who demand immediate action to restore safety and security in the city.

In an interesting parallel, Alameda County's progressive district attorney, Pamela Price, will also face a recall election in November. Price's policies have faced similar criticism for allegedly empowering criminals and failing to prioritize the needs of crime victims.

This recalls the recall of progressive prosecutor Chesa Boudin in neighboring San Francisco in 2022, suggesting a wave of dissatisfaction with progressive leadership regarding public safety in the Bay Area.

As Oakland gears up for the recall election, the future of the city hangs in the balance. The citizens of Oakland, who have experienced loss, fear, and collective trauma on a daily basis, are hopeful that this drastic action will mark the turning point toward a safer and thriving community once again.
