Officer Kayleigh Cooper approached the vehicle on Reservoir Avenue after receiving a shoplifting report from Garden City Center.

In the video, Officer Cooper can be seen approaching the car and instructing the driver to shut it off. When the driver fails to comply, she opens the door, revealing a man in the driver's seat and a woman in the passenger seat. The driver questions the officer's actions, asking, "What are you doing? What is this about?"

Despite the driver's questioning, Officer Cooper continues to order him to exit the vehicle. The woman sitting in the passenger seat can be heard urging the man to drive away. As the man starts the car and it begins moving forward, Officer Cooper exclaims, "You are going to run me over."

The officer fires a shot at the vehicle as it drives away. The bodycam footage does not show when the officer was struck, but the Cranston Police Department had previously stated that the vehicle ran over Officer Cooper's foot. She was subsequently treated at Kent Hospital.

The remainder of the video documents a brief pursuit as Officer Cooper loses sight of the fleeing vehicle and pulls off the highway. Both occupants of the car now face multiple felony charges, including assault and/or battery, assault on a police officer, reckless driving and eluding an officer, obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty, resisting arrest, and conspiracy.

Officer Cooper, who has been with the Cranston Police Department for three years, will be instrumental in the ongoing investigation into the incident. The release of the bodycam footage aims at providing transparency and facilitating a thorough examination of the events leading up to the shooting.

The Cranston Police Department is committed to maintaining the safety of its officers and the community, and this incident highlights the risks they face in carrying out their duties. Authorities will continue to gather evidence and witness statements to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident.
