Residents in a downtown Los Angeles neighborhood are living in fear as copper thieves continue to steal copper wire from streetlights, leaving their streets engulfed in darkness. Bixel Street, in particular, has been heavily affected, with residents reporting months of darkness due to the stolen copper wire.

The lack of streetlights has turned the once vibrant neighborhood into a frightening and sketchy place after sunset. Residents like Roman Lopez express their concerns, stating that the absence of light makes them feel unsafe and uncomfortable in their own community.

Despite numerous complaints from residents, the city has failed to address the issue promptly. Marcial Lopez, another concerned resident, says he has made numerous calls to the city demanding that the lights be fixed, but to no avail. Each time he calls, no action is taken, leaving the neighborhood to suffer in darkness.

The lack of illumination poses a significant problem for residents, as it not only increases the fear of crime but also affects their daily lives. Walking to nearby grocery stores or supermarkets becomes a daunting task, and the absence of light puts residents at risk.

In addition to streetlights, thieves have also targeted nearly half a dozen EV stations along Bixel Street. These charging stations have been rendered useless as the thieves have cut the cables and stolen the copper wire. The exposed wires serve as evidence of the theft, with the unmistakable presence of copper inside.

The Los Angeles Police Department has acknowledged that copper theft remains a chronic issue throughout the city. However, no specific reports have been filed regarding the theft of copper wire from streetlights on Bixel Street. Residents hope that authorities will take notice and address the situation promptly to restore safety and lighting to their neighborhood.

Eyewitness News has reached out to city officials for comment on the matter but has yet to receive a response. As residents continue to live in darkness, the urgency to address the copper theft problem and restore the lighting infrastructure becomes increasingly crucial.
