In another instance of controversy surrounding professional boxer Ryan Garcia, the World Boxing Council (WBC) has expelled him from its organization following a livestream on Twitter Spaces where he made racially insensitive, homophobic, anti-semitic, and anti-Muslim remarks. The WBC, in a swift response, stated that it "rejects any form of discrimination." This expulsion adds to Garcia's tumultuous year, which has been marred by various controversies.
Garcia addressed the severe backlash he received by posting what seemed like contradictory apologies on Instagram. He acknowledged growing up in a neighborhood where racial slurs were commonly used but claimed to be abolishing such language from his vocabulary. Garcia expressed support for black communities but also emphasized that his own pain should be acknowledged. Though his post seemed apologetic, it failed to address other offensive statements he had made, including death threats towards communities.
Furthermore, Garcia's Instagram post contained a picture that seemingly contradicted his apology, as it defended his comments and placed blame on those who were offended, labeling them as "too sensitive." In the picture's caption, Garcia mentioned having supported black communities and enduring racism himself. He questioned the sensitivity of individuals who are triggered by a word, asserting his love for black people and commitment to protecting black children. Garcia claimed that his remarks were aimed at addressing black-on-black crime and denying allegations of racism.
However, Garcia continued to deflect responsibility in the comments section. He attributed the use of slurs to pressure from friends, mentioning that he had grown up in an environment where such language was forced upon him. Additionally, Garcia stated that he would be seeking help for his struggles with substance abuse, acknowledging that it had been a tough period for him.
In a later apology posted on Twitter, Garcia reiterated his struggles with substance abuse and trauma, stating that he takes full responsibility for his words but feels misunderstood. He expressed his love for black people and his regret for offending his black family and friends. Garcia asserted his stance against black-on-black crime and condemned pedophilia.
Garcia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, also weighed in on the controversy via Instagram. De La Hoya strongly condemned Garcia's words, emphasizing that there is no room for hate or intolerance within his company. While De La Hoya acknowledged Garcia's apology as a starting point, he emphasized the need for Garcia to earn back the trust and respect of those who have supported him. De La Hoya expressed a willingness to assist Garcia in addressing the issues he has publicly disclosed.
It is worth noting that Garcia is currently serving a one-year suspension due to a failed drug test following his fight with Devin Haney in April.
As Garcia's controversial remarks continue to stir public outrage, his future in the boxing world remains uncertain. The impact of his actions and subsequent apologies will undoubtedly shape his career moving forward.
