In the aftermath of an ugly incident following Uruguay's defeat to Colombia in the Copa America, South American football's governing body, CONMEBOL, has reportedly reached a decision on Darwin Nunez's suspension ahead of Uruguay's upcoming match against Canada.

During Wednesday night's match, Uruguay suffered a 1-0 loss to Colombia, resulting in their elimination from the 2024 Copa America. However, the post-match scenes took a disturbing turn as Nunez, along with several teammates, was involved in unsavoury altercations in the stands. The skirmishes reportedly occurred in the section where the players' families were located.

Expressing their stance on the matter, CONMEBOL released a statement condemning all forms of violence in football. The statement read, "There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. CONMEBOL strongly condemns any act of violence affecting football. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into supporting their teams and to have an unforgettable celebration."

Amidst concerns that Nunez could face a lengthy ban from football, it has been revealed that he will be permitted to participate in Uruguay's third-place playoff game against Canada. The information comes from Referi, a local source, as well as The Anfield Talk, who confirmed the news on social media. The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) reportedly considers this decision as a "good indication" regarding potential sanctions by CONMEBOL.

Nunez joined his national team for training on Thursday and even took time to interact with fans and pose for photographs, indicating that he will be available for the upcoming match against Canada.

One of Uruguay's players, Jose Maria Gimenez, emotionally spoke out about the incident after the match, expressing concern for the safety of the players' families. He stated, "They don't want me to say anything about what's going on but this is a disaster. Our families are in danger." Gimenez further explained that immediate action was required to ensure the safety of their loved ones in the stands, as the situation escalated quickly. He criticized the lack of police presence and mentioned that the players had to defend their families themselves.

As Uruguay prepares to face Canada in the Copa America's third-place playoff, the focus now shifts to the match itself. The decision to allow Nunez to participate provides the team with some relief, while both Uruguay and CONMEBOL emphasize the importance of a safe and passionate environment for the remaining matches of the tournament.
