In a fiery response to NATO's recent labeling of Beijing as a "decisive enabler" of Russia's war in Ukraine, China has accused the alliance of being an "enormous danger to the world." These comments were made during President Biden's address at NATO's 75th Anniversary Summit, where concerns about his mental acuity were also raised.

The strongly worded communiqué, approved by all 32 NATO member nations and released on Wednesday, marked the alliance's strongest stance against Beijing and its support of Russia since the war began over two years ago. China took offense at being named as a "large-scale supporter" of Russia's defense industry in the NATO document.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, in a briefing on Thursday, stated, "Wherever NATO shows up, turmoil and chaos will follow...NATO's so-called security is more often than not built on others' insecurity, and a lot of its security anxieties are self-made." These accusations were further reinforced by terms such as scaremongering, belligerent, bias, and provocative, used by the spokesperson to describe NATO.

China's refusal to condemn Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, as well as its subsequent support in countering Western sanctions through trade, had already put them at odds with the U.S. and Europe during the ongoing conflict. Chinese President Xi Jinping's meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin have further solidified the partnership between the two nations.

NATO's communiqué highlighted China's "no-limits partnership" with Russia as the fuel behind Putin's war efforts through "material and political support." The alliance called attention to the transfer of dual-use materials, weapons components, equipment, and raw materials, which have served as inputs for Russia's defense sector.

The Chinese spokesperson retaliated by accusing NATO of "fueling the flames" of war by aiding Ukraine and disrupting peace and stability, not only in Europe but also in Asia through collaboration with the U.S. on Indo-Pacific policies. The NATO summit, attended by leaders from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea aimed at addressing security concerns outside of Europe and the escalating relations with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

Despite China's claims that NATO is attempting to "vilify China's domestic and foreign policies," the Chinese military launched military drills on the border of Poland with Belarus. Belarus, a staunch supporter of Russia, was used as a launch pad for the invasion of Ukraine. Chinese officials justified the exercises as "normal" military activities that do not target any specific country.

The escalating tensions between China and NATO, as well as China's military activities near the Polish-Belarusian border, have raised concerns about the state of global security. As the 75th Anniversary Summit of NATO concludes, world leaders continue to search for diplomatic solutions to ease tensions and ensure stability on a global scale.
