In a devastating incident on Friday, a Ceresco Police Officer lost his life after being involved in a crash while conducting a routine traffic stop on Highway 77. The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) reported that Officer Ross Bartlett, 54 years old, had pulled over a vehicle on Highway 77 just south of Ceresco at 7:37 p.m.

Tragically, while Officer Bartlett's cruiser was parked on the shoulder of the road, it was struck by a Ford F150. Swift action was taken by first responders who arrived at the scene and witnessed bystanders providing aid to Officer Bartlett. Despite their efforts, Bartlett sustained severe injuries and was immediately evacuated by air to Bryan West hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and tragically passed away.

The driver of the Ford F150, whose identity remains undisclosed, was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, the driver that Officer Bartlett had pulled over did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

Responding to the incident were crews from Ceresco, Lincoln Fire & Rescue, and StarCare, who worked together to address the aftermath of the tragic accident.

Officer Ross Bartlett had an extensive career in law enforcement, serving various agencies across Nebraska over the past 30 years. He worked with the Valentine Police Department, Boone County Sheriff's Office, Madison Police Department, Madison County Sheriff's Office, and Neuman Grove Police. In 2017, he joined the Ceresco Police Department and was an investigator for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. Officer Bartlett was also an active member of the Ceresco Volunteer Fire Department.

During a press conference held on Saturday, officials from Nebraska spoke fondly in remembrance of Officer Bartlett. Ceresco Police Chief Tony Hernandez expressed his deep condolences, praising Bartlett's dedication to the department and his exceptional professionalism. Chief Hernandez stated, "He really brought a lot to our department. He wrote a lot of our grants. His personality was outstanding. I'm going to miss him dearly, and I'm blessed that our paths crossed."

In honor of Officer Bartlett's service and sacrifice, law enforcement agencies in Nebraska organized a procession, escorting his remains from Omaha to Roper and Sons in Lincoln on Saturday.

The loss of Officer Ross Bartlett is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who selflessly serve to protect our communities. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
