In a surprising turn of events, Multnomah County in Oregon has elected a centrist challenger as the district attorney, ousting the progressive incumbent who had pledged to reform the criminal justice system. Nathan Vasquez, endorsed by several police groups, emerged victorious in Tuesday's nonpartisan primary election after receiving more than 50% of the vote.

Mike Schmidt, the progressive district attorney who was elected in 2020 during widespread social justice protests, conceded the election in a phone call to Vasquez. Schmidt had campaigned on reforming the criminal justice system, focusing on reviewing wrongful convictions and prison sentences, as well as prioritizing violent crimes over low-level offenses.

Vasquez, who has worked as a prosecutor in Multnomah County since 2001, has promised to improve the relationship between the district attorney's office and the police. He also intends to address the city's drug crisis by ending open-air drug dealing and drug use, while connecting individuals to treatment. Moreover, Vasquez aims to rebuild the broken relationships between the community and the office, with a focus on prioritizing victims.

Vasquez's victory comes at a time of political upheaval in Oregon, as the state grapples with worsening homelessness, a fentanyl crisis, and growing public drug use. In April, Oregon reintroduced criminal penalties for the possession of hard drugs, effectively ending the state's groundbreaking three-year decriminalization experiment. Portland has also shifted its approach to dealing with homelessness, moving away from a hands-off approach to clearing street camps.

This election outcome reflects growing frustrations over public safety and homelessness in cities across the west coast. Progressive district attorneys and candidates in liberal bastions such as the San Francisco Bay area and Seattle are facing challenges. Chesa Boudin, the progressive district attorney in San Francisco, is currently facing a recall effort by voters who are dissatisfied with his promises to tackle mass incarceration. However, a similar effort to oust the district attorney in Los Angeles failed.

Schmidt will continue to serve as the district attorney until his term ends in December. Before taking office, Schmidt led the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission, where he worked towards improving the legitimacy and effectiveness of the state's criminal justice system. However, his decision not to prosecute protesters arrested during the 2020 demonstrations for low-level, non-violent offenses, and his support of Measure 110, which decriminalized the possession of small amounts of drugs, drew criticism from Vasquez during the campaign.

With Vasquez's victory, Multnomah County looks set to embark on a new direction that prioritizes public safety, drug reform, and rebuilding trust between the community and law enforcement. The challenges faced by progressive district attorneys in several liberal bastions highlight the shifting political landscape as communities grapple with issues surrounding crime, drug use, and homelessness.
