CBS Evening News Anchor Jeff Glor Let Go Amid Paramount Global Layoffs

Former "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor has been removed from his position as part of a series of layoffs at parent company Paramount Global. Glor, who previously held the anchor chair from 2017 to 2019, had been moved to weekend duties following his replacement by Norah O'Donnell. Sources suggest that Glor's departure may have been influenced by his high salary and his tendency to keep a low profile within the company.
The decision to replace Glor with Norah O'Donnell, along with relocating the broadcast to Washington D.C., has proven to be a costly move for CBS. Despite the investment in the show's relocation, the ratings for the program have not improved, remaining consistently behind its competitors at ABC and NBC. Following O'Donnell's five-year tenure, the ratings have dropped significantly by approximately 25%, prompting CBS to announce her departure from the anchor chair after the upcoming presidential election in November.
In an effort to cut costs and revamp the network, CBS News will be making significant changes to the program. The show will be relocated back to New York City and will undergo a transformation under the leadership of CBS News journalist John Dickerson and WCBS anchorman Maurice DuBois. These modifications come as part of a larger strategy by Paramount to lay off 2,000 employees in order to reduce the budget by $500 million ahead of the anticipated merger with Skydance Media, scheduled to occur next year. The second phase of layoffs, initiated by Paramount, began on Tuesday, with 90% of the staff reductions expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Sources indicate that further cuts may impact CBS News' Washington D.C. bureau post the upcoming election.
