In a recent Copa America match between Canada and Argentina, Canada Soccer has expressed deep concern and condemnation towards the racist abuse targeted at one of their players. Though the player was not named, defender Moise Bombito received racist comments on his Instagram page following Canada's 2-0 loss to Argentina.

The incident occurred after Bombito made a tackle on Argentina captain Lionel Messi, catching him on the ankle. While Messi received treatment for the challenge, he was cleared to continue playing and went on to assist Argentina's second goal in the 88th minute.

Canada Soccer issued a statement in response to the racist abuse, stating, "Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men's national team players following tonight's match. We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL about this matter."

In a later Instagram post, Bombito responded to the abuse, displaying his love for Canada and stating, "No room for that BS."

Taking action against the abuse, Meta, the owner of Instagram, removed the violating comments directed towards Bombito. A spokesperson for Meta emphasized that racist abuse is not tolerated on their platform.

This incident is not an isolated case, as racial abuse towards players has been seen in other recent instances. After France's defeat in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, their players Aurelien Tchouameni, Kingsley Coman, and Randal Kolo Muani also faced racial abuse on their social media accounts.

Moreover, reports emerged of racist chanting by Argentina fans on the streets of Buenos Aires during the celebration of their World Cup victory. Disturbing images circulated on social media, showing effigies of France captain Kylian Mbappe and acts of symbolic violence against the player.

In the Copa America opener, Argentina secured a 2-0 victory over Canada, with goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. The win marked a successful start to Argentina's defense of their Copa America title.

The Athletic has reached out to CONMEBOL and CONCACAF for comments on these incidents. It is crucial for governing bodies and social media platforms to come together to combat and eradicate racial abuse in football and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all players.
