### Governor Newsom Opens Special Legislative Session to Defend California Values Against Incoming Trump Administration

SACRAMENTO – In a decisive move to safeguard the state's core principles, Governor Gavin Newsom has initiated a special session of the California Legislature. The session, aimed at countering potential threats from the incoming Trump administration, focuses on enhancing the state's legal resources to defend civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate initiatives, and the welfare of immigrant families.

The special session marks the beginning of a series of actions by the Newsom Administration, in collaboration with the Legislature. This proactive stance is intended to fortify California against an administration that has previously challenged the state's progressive policies.

"The freedoms we cherish in California are under threat, and we will not remain passive," stated Attorney General Rob Bonta. "California has confronted such challenges before, and we are ready to protect your rights and uphold Californian values. We are closely working with the Governor and the Legislature to reinforce our defenses and ensure we are equipped for every challenge."

Reflecting the urgency of the situation, Speaker Robert Rivas emphasized, "Voters have sent a clear message this election, and we must listen and act accordingly. It's crucial that we prepare to defend California's values against any impending threats."

Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire added his voice, highlighting the lessons learned from former President Trump's previous term. "California has made significant progress, and we cannot allow a regression. This urgent session is a critical step in defending our achievements and foundational values."

The special session, set to begin December 2, is a direct response to the public statements and policy proposals of President-elect Trump and his advisors. During his first term, Trump's administration took actions that threatened fundamental freedoms, including women's and LGBTQ+ rights.

Governor Newsom’s proclamation for the special session includes plans for legislation to allocate additional resources to the California Department of Justice and other state entities. These resources are aimed at enabling swift affirmative litigation against any unlawful federal actions and defending against attempts to undermine California laws.

Since 2019, Governor Newsom and the Legislature have consistently defended progress and protected the state's core values. For instance, in reproductive freedom, Newsom has signed more than 25 bills to expand access, investing over $200 million to support patients and providers. Similarly, California has strengthened the protection of immigrant families through supportive policies and investments. In climate action, the state has invested $45 billion, achieving significant milestones such as meeting electricity demand with clean energy and enhancing battery storage capacity. Additionally, Newsom has long championed LGBTQ+ rights, notably contributing to the repeal of Prop 8 and securing marriage equality in the state constitution by 2024.

Governor Newsom’s concerted efforts underscore California’s resolve to continue its progressive journey and resist any regressive federal policies.
