In the search for a new head coach, the University of Kentucky has reportedly shown interest in BYU Cougars head coach, Mark Pope, as a potential candidate, according to sources. Pope, who has gained recognition for his impressive coaching career at BYU, is among the names being vetted for the prestigious coaching position.

Mark Pope, a former Wildcats center and member of the 1996 national title team, has made significant strides in the college basketball coaching ranks. After transferring from the University of Washington, Pope spent two years at Kentucky and was a crucial part of the 1996 NCAA National Championship squad. His success continued with a successful stint in the NBA.

In 2015, Pope began his coaching journey as he took over the Utah Valley job, concluding his four-year tenure with a commendable 77-56 record. Notably, he achieved a remarkable 48-21 mark over the final two seasons. His impressive coaching abilities did not go unnoticed, and in 2019, he was appointed as the head coach for the BYU Cougars.

During his five seasons with BYU, Pope has accumulated a notable 110-52 record. In his most recent season, the Cougars secured a 19-15 record, earning a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament before losing to 11-seed Duquesne in the Round of 64. It is a testament to Pope's leadership and coaching prowess that BYU made a successful transition to the highly competitive Big 12 conference.

While it remains uncertain whether Pope will ultimately become a serious contender for the Kentucky Wildcats coaching position, the university is expected to carefully evaluate several candidates before making a decision. Pope's association with the university and his successful coaching track record make him an intriguing option for the Wildcats.

As the speculation surrounding the coaching vacancy continues, Wildcat fans and basketball enthusiasts eagerly await news regarding the selection of the next head coach for one of the most storied college basketball programs in the nation.
