Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was limited in practice on Wednesday due to "general arm soreness," according to coach Kevin Stefanski. Coach Stefanski mentioned that he decided to hold back Watson a little bit during practice, but he is not overly concerned about the situation.
Earlier this week, Stefanski had stated that the plan was to play Watson in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, and all starters were expected to participate. However, after Wednesday's practice session, Stefanski did not reveal his plans for Watson in the upcoming game against the Seahawks, keeping it under wraps for now.
Watson, who had season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder last November, took a few reps early in team drills on Wednesday before giving way to backup quarterback Jameis Winston for the remainder of the first-team reps. Despite missing only one training camp practice, Watson did not play in the first two preseason games.
When asked about Watson's arm soreness, Stefanski emphasized that it is not uncommon for quarterbacks to experience soreness, considering the amount of throwing they have to do in practices and games.
In addition to Watson's limited practice, running back Pierre Strong Jr. suffered a rib contusion during individual drills. As a precaution, Strong was transported in an ambulance to University Hospitals due to experiencing shortness of breath. However, he was later released, indicating that his injury was not severe.
On the defensive side, cornerback Denzel Ward remains in concussion protocol after being shaken up during a collision with wide receiver Elijah Moore last week. Stefanski confirmed that Ward is still going through the necessary steps to clear the concussion protocol.
As the Browns continue their preparations for the upcoming season, the team remains hopeful that these minor setbacks will not have a significant impact on the availability and performance of key players like Deshaun Watson and Denzel Ward. The coaching staff will carefully monitor their progress and make decisions accordingly as they approach the final preseason game and prepare for the regular season ahead.
