A man who heroically shielded his fiancée from a maniac who threw flaming liquid on them in a New York City subway on Saturday has spoken out about the shocking incident from his hospital bed. Petrit Alijaj, 23, recounted the terrifying attack, revealing the extent of his injuries and expressing his gratitude for being able to protect his betrothed.
Alijaj, who is originally from Albania, recounted how he and his fiancée, along with his cousin, were on their way to visit the Statue of Liberty when the assailant, later identified as 49-year-old Nile Taylor, entered the train at the Varick Street station in lower Manhattan. Taylor was holding a cup filled with a liquid substance, which he proceeded to ignite and throw onto the unsuspecting commuters.
Acting quickly, Alijaj turned his body to shield his fiancée and cousin from the flaming liquid. His shirt caught fire, but he managed to put out the flames by slapping himself as he fled the train. Concerned that the attacker might return with more flammable liquid, Alijaj eventually managed to remove his burning T-shirt.
Upon reaching the hospital, Alijaj discovered the severity of his injuries, with burns covering approximately 30 percent of his body, including his neck, ears, chest, arms, and left hand. Despite the pain, Alijaj expressed relief that his face remained unscathed.
Doctors estimated the extent of the burns, but Alijaj optimistically believed the percentage might be lower. He remained hopeful and smiled, stating that it could be closer to 10 percent. Despite suffering from painful blisters on his ear, Alijaj proudly revealed that he could still hear.
Meanwhile, authorities quickly apprehended Taylor after tracking a cell phone he had picked up while fleeing the scene. Police sources revealed that they are investigating whether Taylor may have been involved in a similar incident four months prior.
Alijaj's courageous actions in protecting his loved ones have garnered widespread admiration and support. As he continues his recovery at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital, thoughts and well wishes are being shared for his swift healing and the capture of those responsible for this senseless attack.
