Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason has announced his departure from his co-hosting duties on "The NFL Today." Esiason, 63, expressed his relief, stating that he had been planning to leave the show and is now focused on achieving a better work-life balance.
During an interview on The Dan LeBatard Show, Esiason shared his thoughts on stepping away from "The NFL Today." He stated, "I loved that seat. I cherished talking to football fans every Sunday, but there comes a time when you have to find some time for yourself. And this was the right time."
Esiason confirmed that he will continue to be part of the WFAN morning show, signing a long-term deal with co-host Gregg Giannotti. However, his departure from "The NFL Today" marks an end to his 22-year run on the flagship NFL show.
Joining Esiason in leaving the show is former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms. Simms, 68, announced his departure after a 26-year tenure with CBS. The vacancies left by Esiason and Simms will be filled by new additions, Matt Ryan and J.J. Watt, who will join James Brown, Nate Burleson, and Bill Cowher on the show.
Reflecting on his time at CBS, Esiason expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the support he received. He emphasized that throughout his tenure, he never faced any criticism or pressure to back off from controversial topics.
Esiason also revealed that the retirement announcement of CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus played a role in his decision to step away. He believed it was a natural moment for a transition and mentioned that Simms did not want to retire from the show, while he himself felt ready for a new chapter.
Having dedicated 22 years to "The NFL Today," Esiason described his time at CBS as a "great run." He emphasized that he holds no ill will towards anyone at the network and remains appreciative of the experience.
With his departure from the show, Esiason aims to find a better work-life balance for himself. While fans will miss his insights and discussions on "The NFL Today," they can still catch him on the airwaves as he continues his radio presence alongside Gregg Giannotti.
It remains to be seen how the addition of Matt Ryan and J.J. Watt will impact the dynamics of the show, but the changes signal a new era for "The NFL Today" as it moves forward without the familiar faces of Esiason and Simms.
