### Tensions Escalate in Bolivia as Evo Morales Claims Assassination Attempt
Political tensions in Bolivia have taken a violent turn as former Bolivian president Evo Morales reported that his vehicle was struck by gunfire, an incident captured in a video he shared on social media. Morales, who was in the car at the time, displayed two bullet holes in the windshield while seated in the front passenger seat. The footage also showed the driver to be injured. Morales has accused the current government of orchestrating the attack.
The former president described the incident in detail during a radio interview, noting that two vehicles intercepted his car and opened fire, with a bullet reportedly missing his head by mere centimeters. However, Bolivia's deputy security minister, Roberto Ríos, stated that the police were not involved in any operation against Morales. Ríos added that authorities are required to investigate any claims, irrespective of their veracity.
This event underscores the rising conflict between Morales and President Luis Arce, his former ally. Morales has alleged that the government is to blame for the incident, further intensifying the already high political tensions. Supporters of Morales have been blockading major highways, leading to clashes with security forces attempting to dismantle the barricades. The unrest, which has persisted for two weeks, has disrupted the supply of essential goods such as food and fuel.
In response to Morales' actions, the government accused him of attempting to destabilize the country and disrupt democratic order. A statement released by the government indicated that some of Morales' allied groups were armed and had resorted to violence, with 14 police officers injured in efforts to clear the blockades.
The growing friction between Morales and President Arce, both members of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, has become increasingly pronounced over the past year. This internal power struggle comes as Bolivia prepares for upcoming elections in 2025. The country is also facing economic challenges, including declining gas production, depleted foreign currency reserves, and escalating inflation, all of which are exacerbating the political turmoil.
Morales is concurrently dealing with allegations of inappropriate relationships with minors. Regional prosecutors summoned him for testimony in the case, but his failure to appear has led to an arrest warrant being issued. Morales has denied these allegations.
As Bolivia navigates these turbulent times, the political landscape remains volatile, with significant implications for the nation's future stability.
