San Jose State University's women's volleyball team has reached the Mountain West Conference championship amidst controversy, as Boise State University chose to forfeit their semifinal match. This marks the third instance Boise State has refused to compete against San Jose State because of the inclusion of a transgender player on the team.

The San Jose State Spartans, already given a first-round bye, were slated to play against Boise State in the semifinals on Friday. However, after Boise State defeated Utah State University earlier in the week to secure their spot in the semifinals, they ultimately decided not to participate. In a statement, Boise State highlighted the complexity of their decision, expressing that their team should not have to sacrifice opportunities while waiting for a more inclusive system for all athletes.

Boise State's refusal has intensified the broader national debate about the participation of transgender women in women's sports. This issue has repeatedly surfaced throughout the season, with seven Mountain West teams opting out of playing matches against San Jose State for the same reason. Boise State had also forfeited two regular season games against the Spartans earlier this year.
