In response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries have announced the formation of a new bipartisan task force. The task force includes Republican members Chairman Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, Mark Green of Tennessee, David Joyce of Ohio, Laurel Lee of Florida, Michael Waltz of Florida, Clay Higgins of Louisiana, and Pat Fallon of Texas. Congressman Kelly, hailing from Butler, Pennsylvania, where the assassination attempt took place, authored the resolution that led to the creation of the task force.

On the Democratic side, the task force will include Ranking Member Jason Crow of Colorado, Lou Correa of California, Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Glenn Ivey of Maryland, and Jared Moskowitz of Florida. These members will work alongside their Republican counterparts to seek answers and accountability for the security breach.

With the passage of a resolution by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 416 to 0, the House has expressed its commitment to uncovering the truth behind the incident. The task force has been given a deadline of December 13, 2024, to deliver its final report, which will include recommendations for necessary legislative reforms to prevent future security lapses.

In addition to their subpoena authority, the task force will also have the power to issue interim reports deemed necessary and conduct depositions as part of their investigation.
