In a surprising move, progressive US senator Bernie Sanders has thrown his support behind Joe Biden, describing him as the "most effective president in the modern history of our country" and the strongest candidate to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential election. Sanders made his endorsement in an opinion piece published in the New York Times.

Biden has faced mounting criticism from fellow Democrats following a disastrous televised debate with Trump. However, Sanders, a prominent figure on the left of the Democratic party, has joined Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in voicing his support for Biden. Despite calls from around 20 elected Democrats for Biden to step down due to his perceived frailty and tough re-election prospects, Sanders firmly believes that Democrats must focus on Trump's numerous problems rather than engaging in internal disputes.

"While I may have disagreements with Biden on certain issues, there is no denying that he has been the most effective president in the modern history of our country," wrote Sanders. He went on to emphasize Biden's ability to defeat Trump, whom he described as a "demagogue and pathological liar."

Sanders also criticized the Democrats' "circular firing squad" and urged them to stop criticizing Biden's performance. Instead, he encouraged them to concentrate their efforts on exposing Trump's felony convictions, sexual abuse case, bankruptcies, and the thousands of documented lies and falsehoods. Sanders reminded readers that a presidential election is not an entertainment contest, asserting that although Biden may not be the ideal candidate, he is the candidate who should represent the party.

While polls show Biden either trailing or tied with Trump, the former vice-president remains unwavering in his commitment to remain in the race for November's election. Biden admitted to making a "stupid mistake" of being extremely busy prior to the debate, including exhausting international trips. In response, Trump took aim at Kamala Harris, Biden's running mate, indicating that she may be a likely replacement if Biden were to withdraw. Trump unveiled a new nickname for Harris, calling her "Laffin' Kamala" at a recent campaign rally in Florida.

The announcement of Sanders' support for Biden adds a significant boost to the Democratic nominee's campaign, but the road to victory remains challenging. With the election drawing nearer, all eyes will be on the candidates and their strategies as they vie for the presidency in a highly contentious and divisive political climate.
