**Ball State Dismisses Coach Mike Neu Following Disappointing Season**
Ball State University announced the termination of head football coach Mike Neu on Saturday, concluding his nine-season tenure with the Cardinals. This decision comes as the team struggles with a 3-7 record for the current season, marking a fourth consecutive losing season.
Mike Neu, a well-respected alum of Ball State, held a record of 40-63 during his time as head coach. The highlight of his career came in 2020 when he led the Cardinals to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship, finishing the season with a 7-1 record and securing a victory against San Jose State in the Arizona Bowl. Despite his efforts, that year remained the only winning season under his leadership.
The coaching staff was informed of Neu's dismissal early Saturday morning, sources told ESPN. In the wake of his departure, offensive line coach Colin Johnson has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, as confirmed by athletic director Jeff Mitchell. Ball State faces Bowling Green on November 23 and will conclude their season with an away game against Ohio on November 29.
Jeff Mitchell paid tribute to Neu’s contributions in a statement, saying, "Coach Neu has poured his heart into the Ball State football program. I commend him for his professionalism and the positive team culture he has constructed. His efforts have greatly impacted the lives of hundreds of young men. He has represented the Ball State brand with integrity and class, and I wish him well in future pursuits."
Ball State's most recent game resulted in a narrow 51-48 overtime loss to Buffalo, further solidifying their 2-4 record in MAC play. This latest defeat sealed their disappointing season, prompting the university's decision to make a change in leadership.
