PARIS - French authorities have launched an investigation into the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old Australian woman in Paris, just days before the highly anticipated start of the 2024 Olympics in the French capital.

The incident is said to have occurred on the night of July 19 or in the early hours of July 20. The woman reportedly sought refuge in a restaurant, believed to be a kebab shop, where she revealed the assault to others. Firefighters provided her with necessary care, according to the Paris prosecutor's office.

The prosecutor's office has assigned the 2nd judicial police district to investigate the charge of gang rape. Local media reports suggest that the restaurant owner alerted emergency services upon seeing the distressed woman, who was subsequently taken to the hospital.

Disturbing footage has allegedly surfaced, capturing the moment the woman fled from her attackers and pleaded for help from patrons at the restaurant. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

The Australian Olympic team, represented by chef de mission Anna Meares, expressed their sympathy and concern for the victim, stating, "Our hearts go out to the woman involved, and we hope she's receiving the necessary care and support in dealing with the trauma she has experienced".

The incident has raised concerns regarding the security of the upcoming Olympics in Paris. However, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has praised the efforts of the police and security forces in ensuring the safety of athletes and fans alike. The capital city has deployed around 30,000 police officers daily, with a peak of 45,000 for the opening ceremony on the Seine river.

Paris has chosen to host many of its Olympic events in the heart of the city, which presents unprecedented security challenges. In light of previous extremist attacks and ongoing international tensions, ensuring the safety of participants and spectators remains a top priority.

The Games, scheduled from this Friday until August 11, will be closely monitored by approximately 18,000 military personnel, as France strives to host a successful and secure global event.

The investigation into the alleged gang rape continues, as authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
