In a recent exclusive interview with 10 On Your Side, the attorneys representing Abby Zwerner, the Richneck Elementary School teacher who was shot by a 6-year-old student over a year ago, shared disturbing revelations from a special grand jury report. The attorneys, Diane Toscano and Kevin Biniazan, discussed their findings and highlighted administrative failures and security lapses leading up to the tragic incident.

The attorneys expressed their shock at the lack of care exhibited in the administration office following Zwerner's shooting. They pointed out the absence of discipline files for the shooter and emphasized the alarming discovery that the gun had jammed, potentially preventing an even greater tragedy. The attorneys even hinted at a possible cover-up, a claim echoed by the special grand jury report, which recommended a continuing investigation into missing files and potential obstruction of justice charges against certain parties, including Dr. Parrott.

Another area of concern highlighted by the attorneys was the woefully ill-prepared school administration's response to the incident. They criticized the absence of a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO), noting that the buzzer at the school's entrance was not functioning properly. Additionally, the attorneys revealed that responding police officers waited a full minute before being able to access the premises.

Toscano and Biniazan argued that this case could set an important precedent for holding school officials accountable for ensuring the safety of students and staff during the school day. They expressed their belief that clear and obvious measures could have been taken to prevent Zwerner's shooting.

The attorneys were particularly troubled by the conduct of Principal Briana Foster-Newton and Assistant Principal Dr. Ebony Parker after the shooting. The grand jury report revealed that the two officials locked themselves in their office while individuals seeking protection were left outside their door unprotected. The report cited the testimony that Foster opened the door, briefly saw Zwerner, and then closed the door again before attending to her. Neither Foster nor Parker provided any aid to Zwerner.

Zwerner's attorneys found the grand jury report to be supportive of their portrayal of the events surrounding the shooting. They cited a consistent pattern of inaction that was evident throughout the report leading up to and after the incident on January 6.

As for Abby Zwerner herself, Toscano described her current state as a roller coaster. The teacher continues to navigate the physical and emotional challenges resulting from the incident, with each day presenting its own unique difficulties.

The findings from the special grand jury report shed light on the administrative failures and security flaws that played a part in the tragic shooting at Richneck Elementary School. The report's recommendations for further investigation and potential charges against those responsible indicate a quest for accountability and justice in the wake of the incident.
