In a shocking incident at the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, an attacker armed with a crossbow wounded a police officer before being shot and killed by authorities. The incident is being described as a "terrorist attack against Serbia" by officials.
According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the attacker approached the police officer several times, asking for the location of a museum. Suddenly, the attacker pulled out a crossbow from his bag and shot the guard in the neck with an arrow. In self-defense, the officer fired back, resulting in the attacker later succumbing to his injuries.
The identity of the assailant is yet to be determined, and authorities are investigating possible motives. One person has been arrested near the scene, and police are looking into potential ties with "foreign terrorist groups". Minister Dacic also mentioned that the individuals believed to be involved in the incident are already known to security services.
The wounded policeman was promptly transported to Belgrade's main hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove the arrow from his neck. Hospital officials have confirmed that he is in stable condition after the operation.
The Israeli foreign ministry has stated that the embassy remains closed, and none of its employees were injured. Investigations are underway to determine further details surrounding the incident.
Israel's embassy in Belgrade is located in a prestigious district, not far from the United States embassy. It is under tight security, guarded by an elite police unit armed with automatic weapons.
President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia visited the wounded officer in the hospital, vowing to crack down on terrorism and declaring, "We will have no mercy for terrorism in Serbia." Prime Minister Milos Vucevic also condemned the attack, labeling it a "heinous terrorist act" and emphasizing that it was the act of an individual, disconnected from any religion or nation.
Authorities in white forensic suits cordoned off the area surrounding the attacker's body, which was found outside the embassy. Several individuals believed to be linked to the incident have been arrested.
Serbia, a country that has maintained close ties with Israel, has pledged a firm response to the "threat of terrorism", assuring its citizens that they can "feel safe".
As the investigation progresses, Serbia remains on high alert, and security measures have been intensified around Israel-linked institutions worldwide. The circumstances behind the attack are actively being investigated to ensure the safety of diplomatic missions in Belgrade and beyond.
