In a surprising turn of events, David DePape, the man convicted of assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer, has been resentenced to 30 years in prison after a federal judge expressed remorse for not allowing him to speak during his initial sentencing hearing.
Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley, acknowledging her mistake, brought DePape back to district court in San Francisco after stating that she had made a "clear error" by not granting DePape the opportunity to make a statement before being sentenced back in May. "I'm truly sorry for my mistake," Corley admitted to DePape and his attorneys.
During the resentencing hearing, the 44-year-old DePape broke down while reading a prepared statement, expressing his remorse for hurting Mr. Pelosi. He also mentioned that he should have left when he discovered Nancy Pelosi was not present at the time of the attack.
DePape further acknowledged that, upon reflection, he realized he was not in a mentally stable state during the incident. These statements, however, could not alter the outcome, and DePape was resentenced to 30 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey had previously stated that the sentence reflected DePape's lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting Mr. Pelosi. The Pelosi family, on the other hand, released a brief statement after the initial sentence, expressing their pride in Paul Pelosi's courage in saving his own life during the attack. They also expressed gratitude for the support they received during Mr. Pelosi's recovery.
DePape was initially convicted last year of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had originally sought a 40-year prison term.
In a victim impact statement, Paul Pelosi mentioned that his life has been forever altered since the attack. DePape had admitted during trial testimony that he had broken into the Pelosi home in October 2022 with the intention of holding Nancy Pelosi hostage and causing harm if she lied to him. He also confessed to assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer when police arrived, explaining that his plan to combat what he perceived as government corruption had unraveled.
With this resentencing, DePape will serve a lengthy prison term, while the Pelosi family continues to cope with the aftermath of this harrowing ordeal.
