In a tragic incident in Long Beach, California, a 51-year-old Army veteran and father was killed while doing yard work outside his home. Mario Morales-Moreno was struck by an apparently stray bullet in the 600 block of East 61st Street on April 4. Another man was also injured in the shooting but is in stable condition.
According to witnesses, Moreno was gardening when the shooting occurred. Police believe it was a gang-related incident, but they do not believe Moreno was the intended target. The investigation into the motive behind the shooting is ongoing.
Long Beach police announced on Wednesday that four men have been arrested in connection with the killing. Taylor Byron Woods, 20, of Bellflower, was initially arrested on the night of the crime for possessing a firearm and was later booked in connection with the killing. Tyrell Deshawn Louden, 20, of Indio, was apprehended on Tuesday in Indio by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and taken to Long Beach City Jail.
Jordan Omarion Stokes, 18, of Long Beach, was arrested on separate weapons violations by the Gardena Police Department and subsequently booked by Long Beach police on Tuesday in connection with the killing. Semaj Lamar Obrien, 21, of Long Beach, was also arrested on Monday. During the arrests, multiple firearms were recovered, leading detectives to serve search warrants in Long Beach, Bellflower, and Indio.
All four men were charged on Wednesday with one count each of murder and conspiracy, as well as four counts each of attempted murder. They also face gun allegations. Their arraignment at the Long Beach Courthouse has been postponed until April 25, and they have been ordered to be held without bail.
LBPD Chief Wally Hebeish expressed his condemnation of gang-related violence and stated that the criminal act had forever changed Moreno's family's lives. He commended the tireless efforts of the police personnel involved in the investigation and arrests, emphasizing their commitment to holding violent individuals accountable and removing dangerous firearms from their hands. Hebeish also recognized the assistance provided by the community in bringing about a swift resolution to the case.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Kristi Wyffels, a friend and neighbor of Moreno, to support his grieving family. She described Moreno as a "fixture" in their North Long Beach neighborhood, known for his generosity and willingness to help others. As of Wednesday, the fundraising campaign had raised over $15,000.
The untimely death of Mario Morales-Moreno has left his loved ones and community devastated. The upcoming court proceedings will determine the fate of the four men charged in his killing as investigators continue their efforts to understand the motive behind the tragic incident.
