Armed Man Arrested in New York City with Suspicious Writings
In a surprising turn of events, an armed man with body armor, knives, and suspicious writings was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Queens, New York City. The arrest occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to four law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.
The identity of the individual has not yet been released, leaving many questions surrounding his intent, destination, and the reasons behind his possession of weapons. Authorities are currently looking into whether the man has a history of emotional issues and whether he was attempting to self-radicalize in the name of terrorism.
The New York City Police Department is leading the investigation, and the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, along with other law enforcement agencies, has been notified due to the items found and additional evidence gathered. The writings discovered on the suspect included a phrase that read: "You gonna learn today."
This incident follows the recent arrest of eight men from Tajikistan in different locations across the United States, including New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. While these men were on the radar of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, they have not yet been charged with any terrorist-related activities or plots. Instead, they were apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on immigration charges based on information provided by the FBI.
The Tajikistan suspects will now face removal proceedings before an immigration judge while the possibility of later facing terrorism-related charges remains open, as stated by two sources familiar with the matter.
As investigations continue on both cases, law enforcement agencies are remaining vigilant in order to ensure the safety and security of the public. Further information regarding these incidents is expected to be released as the inquiries progress.
