According to the Associated Press, the assailant wounded multiple individuals before being shot by responding police officers.

The attack, which was captured on camera by the Buergerbewegung Pax Europa group, occurred in Mannheim's downtown area, specifically on the Marktplatz square. Stürzenberger, a member of the organization, suffered severe stab wounds to his face and leg, as confirmed by Buergerbewegung Pax Europa in a statement. He has been hastily taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Reports state that a police officer, who attempted to intervene and stop the attacker, was also stabbed in the back and neck. The injured officer has also been transported to a hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the police have confirmed that there is no longer any danger to the public.

The motive behind the knife attack remains unclear at this time, and investigations are underway to determine the perpetrator's intentions. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that the investigation must ascertain if there was an Islamist motive behind the attack, highlighting the ongoing concern of Islamist acts of violence.

Buergerbewegung Pax Europa, known for their vocal opposition to Islam and Muslims in Germany, including calls for a ban on mosques, displayed a banner at the scene stating "stop political Islam!" The group expressed their dismay following the incident and condemned the violence.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz took to social media to express his outrage, calling the pictures from Mannheim "terrible" and stating that "violence is absolutely unacceptable in our democracy."

Mannheim, a city with a population of approximately 300,000 people, is situated south of Frankfurt. The stabbing incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety and security of public spaces.

The Associated Press has contributed to this report, and further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured parties are awaited.
