### Amazon Web Services Partners with Dominion Energy for Small Modular Reactors in Virginia
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has entered into three strategic agreements, including one with Dominion Energy, to develop nuclear power projects aimed at supporting its expansive data centers. The partnership with Dominion Energy will explore the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) near Dominion’s existing North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Louisa County.
These SMRs offer a smaller physical footprint compared to traditional nuclear reactors, allowing them to be closer to the power grid and facilitating faster construction and delivery times. The proposed project near Virginia’s Lake Anna is expected to provide at least 300 megawatts of power, addressing an anticipated 85% increase in power demand over the next 15 years in the Virginia region.
AWS's investment also includes agreements with Energy Northwest in Washington State and X-energy, a company specializing in next-generation SMR reactors and fuel technology. This strategic move underscores AWS's commitment to meeting the growing power demands of its data centers, especially in regions like Northern Virginia, where about 70% of the country's data centers are located.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin praised Amazon's initiative, highlighting it as crucial for positioning Virginia as a leader in nuclear innovation. He emphasized that AWS’s commitment to SMR technology, alongside its partnership with Dominion, marks a significant advancement in ensuring the state’s future power needs are met.
This agreement is part of AWS’s broader investment strategy in nuclear energy, totaling $500 million across the three SMR projects. Additionally, AWS recently signed an agreement for a data center co-location next to Talen Energy's nuclear facility in Pennsylvania, further reinforcing its long-term vision for sustainable and reliable power solutions.
