More high school students in Alabama have been apprehended following alarming threats of violence in Birmingham and Calhoun County. The incidents involve a bomb threat and shooting threats. Authorities are taking these cases seriously and swift action has been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
One teenage student from Weaver High School was arrested on Thursday evening, according to Sheriff Matthew Wade. The investigation began after a concerned parent reported a threat of violence against another student, which was promptly relayed to a school resource officer. The student in question has been charged with first-degree making a terroristic threat, a felony offense. They are currently being held in the Coosa Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
Sheriff Wade also mentioned that an ongoing investigation is underway regarding a social media threat targeting several schools in the county. While it is believed that the juvenile suspect is not the creator of the widely spread social media message, they did reference the message and utilized the fear it generated as part of their threat towards another student.
Earlier, on September 11, with the assistance of the Homewood Police Department, the Birmingham Police Department's Intelligence Unit alerted school resource officers about a social media threat involving a potential shooting at Carver and Parker High School. In response, the BPD Felony Assault detectives, armed with a search warrant, collaborated with the BPD Narcotics Unit to search a residence in Northern Birmingham. The joint effort aided detectives in their ongoing investigation.
A 16-year-old student from Carver High School was subsequently arrested and is currently detained in the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center on a charge of first-degree making a terroristic threat. It is a concerning development that highlights the consequences of making such threats that could disrupt the educational environment and put lives at risk.
Another incident occurred on Thursday when a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody for making a bomb threat at Woodlawn High School. The student was apprehended on-site and charged with making a terroristic threat.
These recent arrests add to a growing number of Alabama teenagers facing legal consequences for making threats statewide following a tragic school shooting in Georgia. Law enforcement agencies in Birmingham, Montgomery, Dothan, and Southside have all announced arrests in recent weeks, demonstrating their commitment to protecting the safety and wellbeing of students and staff in educational institutions.
Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to investigate and prevent further incidents. It serves as a stark reminder that any form of threat or violence targeting schools will be met with serious consequences, ensuring that schools can continue to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their students.
