Akron, Ohio - Authorities are urgently appealing to the public for information following a deadly mass shooting that occurred during a street party over the weekend. One person was killed and 24 others sustained injuries, some critical, in the incident, which took place just after midnight on Sunday.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the Akron police believe that at least one individual opened fire on the crowd from a vehicle. Law enforcement officers discovered over 35 shell casings strewn across the block where the shooting occurred. Additionally, two handguns were found at the scene, indicating the possibility that partygoers may have returned fire at the assailant's vehicle.
The incident unfolded as more than 100 people were celebrating a birthday in the residential street, which is flanked by empty lots and older homes. Plastic cups, shoes, and other debris were scattered across the area, serving as eerie reminders of the chaos that unfolded.
Despite ongoing efforts, authorities have yet to identify any suspects as of Sunday evening. The mayor and police chief of Akron have jointly appealed to witnesses to come forward with valuable information that can assist in apprehending the culprits. Recognizing the significance of community participation, rewards totaling $22,500 have been offered by the Summit County Crime Stoppers, U.S. Marshal's Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for any leads leading to an arrest.
"The sheer number of victims is shocking and disconcerting. I want to be very clear: Anyone who was involved in last night's shooting will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," emphasized Mayor Shammas Malik, underlining the city's determination to bring justice to the victims and their families.
The deceased individual has been identified as Lateris Cook, a 27-year-old resident of Akron, according to the county medical examiner. The wounded victims, ranging in age from 19 to 43, were immediately rushed to local hospitals for treatment. At least two individuals remain in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the injuries sustained during the shooting.
Prior to the tragic incident, officers responded to noise complaints and attempted to disperse the gathering earlier on Saturday night. The party, which attracted over 200 attendees, including some individuals setting off fireworks, was temporarily calmed but resurged hours later. Multiple calls reporting shots fired were received by law enforcement shortly after midnight on Sunday, prompting their rapid response to the chaotic scene.
In light of this disturbing incident, both the mayor and police chief emphasized the need for accountability and unity within the community. "We have to hold people accountable when they commit violence. That's the only way to keep our communities safe," declared Mayor Malik, urging residents to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth behind this senseless act of violence. The Akron Police Department urges anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice, while offering their deepest condolences to the victims and their families affected by this tragedy.
