ABC News has appointed Almin Karamehmedovic, the executive producer of "World News Tonight with David Muir," as the new president of the news division. Karamehmedovic's promotion comes after a three-month period during which ABC News operated without a leader following the departure of Kim Godwin. The decision, made by Debra OConnell, president of ABC News Group, networks, and Disney Entertainment, surprised some within the network and marked a departure from the speculation that an internal candidate would be chosen.

In his new role as president, Karamehmedovic will oversee the day-to-day operations of ABC News, including its flagship shows "World News Tonight" and "Good Morning America." While some insiders questioned the appointment, citing concerns about Karamehmedovic's likability and reputation as a "bit of a bully," others praised his extensive experience and strategic approach to boosting ratings.

Karamehmedovic has been with ABC News since 2014, first serving as the executive producer of "Nightline" and subsequently taking the reins of "World News Tonight" in August of the same year. Under his leadership, "World News Tonight" has maintained its position as the most-watched newscast for eight consecutive years.

Expressing his gratitude and commitment to the network, Karamehmedovic said, "I approach this role with great respect and humility, not only for the hundreds of colleagues around the world whose tireless contributions fuel the unflinching and unbiased reporting of ABC News but also for the viewers we serve."

Debra OConnell praised Karamehmedovic, hailing him as a seasoned journalist who has earned the trust and respect of his colleagues and industry peers. OConnell expressed confidence that ABC News would reach new heights under his leadership.

The decision to appoint Karamehmedovic comes at a crucial time for ABC News. The network is preparing to host its first presidential debate next month, and negotiations for contracts with on-air talent are looming. The absence of leadership had created frustration among agents and cast doubt on the stability of the network.

The departure of former president Kim Godwin was mired in controversy and criticism. Godwin faced scrutiny for her handling of an affair involving two "GMA3" hosts, TJ Holmes and Amy Robach. Her subsequent decisions and management style drew accusations of creating a "culture of fear" and led to the departure of high-level ABC executives. The culmination of these events ultimately prompted Disney to bring in Debra OConnell to oversee Godwin and marked a turning point in her tenure.

ABC News remains optimistic about the future under Karamehmedovic's leadership, confident that his experience and strategic mindset will guide the network to continued success.
