In a tragic incident in Garden Grove, California, a 5-year-old boy has been declared brain dead after he and four members of his family were struck by a suspected DUI driver in a hit-and-run accident. The devastating incident occurred on Sunday night when the family was out for a bicycle ride.

The family, consisting of the parents and their three children, was riding in bike trailers on Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane when they were hit by a 2003 Toyota Camry. Garden Grove police reported that the collision happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. The impact of the crash left the 27-year-old father, Angel Ramirez, and his two young children, Jacob and their 7-year-old sister, in critical condition. They were rushed to hospitals for urgent medical attention.

The other family members involved in the incident were 25-year-old Angela Hernandez Mejia and her 7-month-old daughter. They were hospitalized with stable vital signs, and Angela was later released.

Authorities have charged the suspect, identified as Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana, with multiple felonies, including hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. The Orange County district attorney's office also added sentencing enhancements for leaving a victim comatose or paralyzed and inflicting great bodily injury.

According to the criminal complaint, two of the victims sustained brain injuries and were comatose. Prosecutors allege that Ramos had a blood-alcohol level of. 22 when he got into his car in Santa Ana and drove to a liquor store in Anaheim to purchase more beer.

Ramos appeared in court for his arraignment but did not enter a plea. He is scheduled to be arraigned on July 25 at the West Justice Center in Westminster.

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, a GoFundMe page has been created to support the victims and their family, providing assistance during this difficult time.

The community remains in shock and sends their thoughts and prayers to the Ramirez family, hoping for a miracle in Jacob's recovery. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, emphasizing the need for responsible and sober driving to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
